Sony Pictures and City of Albuquerque have unveiled the official bronze statues of Too bad The Walter White and Jesse Pinkman characters gifted by series creator Vince Gilligan to The Duke City. Pictures from the ceremony at which the statues were unveiled were posted online courtesy of Sony Pictures Entertainment. The sculptures were created by artist Trevor Grove and represented by the American Fine Arts Foundry, with Gilligan himself commissioned to create them in 2019. Gilligan chose to create and present the sculptures to Albuquerque as a thank you for being home to Too bad And the The best of Saul on demandCast and crew for over a decade.
Gilligan came up with the idea after seeing a small wax statue that Grove had made. “It was so amazing that it got me thinking: What if Trevor could sculpt a life-size version of Walter White in bronze, a new medium for him, and what if he could throw Jesse Pinkman to boot, then we donate the two statues to the City of Albuquerque Thank you for your hospitality? Gilligan said at the unveiling party.
Addressing the fact that two “pseudo methamphetamine dealers” were honored by the city, Gilligan said he understood anyone who wasn’t keen on the two statues. “In all seriousness, some people will say, ‘Wow, just what our city needs.’ I got that,” Gilligan added. “But let me tell you what I see when I look at these two artworks: I see two of the best actors America has ever produced. I see them in character as two tragic larger than life characters, cautionary tales, and a world of celebrity at that. “
according to Albuquerque Magazinethe mayor’s office revealed to KOAT that over $385 million in economic impact came to New Mexico as a result of filming the Breaking Bad series and spinoff/prequel Better Call Saul.
“We’re humbled by this,” Cranston, who won four Primetime Emmy Awards for his performance as Walter White, said at the event. “We’re thrilled, a little embarrassed to have statues of you. And when they first came to me and said we wanted to make two for you, and I thought, ‘Wow, cool, Heisenberg and Walter White!'” “I’m really grateful….there’s no willingness to say you’ll get a statue. I’m so thankful it’s inside so pigeons don’t pop our heads out.”
Cranston and Paul will reprise their Breaking Bad roles in the next episode of Better Call Saul. Statues of their characters can be seen at the Albuquerque Convention Center
